History

On the 30 October 1914 the States of Deliberation approved the creation of a special committee with specific responsibility for policing the island.

A salaried ‘Island Police Force’ consisting of one inspector, two sergeants, two corporals and eleven constables commenced duty on 14 March 1915 and were mandated in the following areas.

  • Watching over all criminal affairs of the Island.
  • Maintenance of Peace and Good Order in this Island.
  • Carry out the Laws and Ordinances of the Royal Court apart from those which are truly civil.
  • To take necessary steps for an inquest.
  • Supervise the laws relating to driving on the roads and paths of this Island.
  • Superintend the Harbours of the Island, Licensed Places for the sale of Liquors, Wines, Beer and Cider, the Coast of the Island and Fishing.
All other duties which may be required from time to time, by Ordinance of the Royal Court and recommended by the Committee.
